A scholarship endowment has been established at 黑料正能量 in memory of E. Ray Mayo. The scholarship will assist with tuition, books, and tools for students pursuing a degree in Computer-Integrated Machining at WCC, honoring Mayo鈥檚 support of the local and regional economy鈥檚 manufacturing sector.
A former Wayne County commissioner, Mayo passed away in 2020.
Mayo owned and operated North Carolina Manufacturing, Inc. He was a champion of apprenticeships, and his company is an employer partner with WCC鈥檚 Apprenticeship Wayne program. Mayo was also a member of the WCC Industrial Technologies Advisory Board and WCC Steering Committee for Advanced Manufacturing.
In addition to North Carolina Manufacturing, Inc., Mayo was a co-owner of M&M Industrial Supply in Goldsboro. He previously worked as a machine shop instructor at Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School in Virginia and as a manufacturing engineer at Acme United Corporation in Fremont.
鈥淗aving a scholarship endowment established in memory of my father solidifies his efforts to promote the importance of education, especially in the machining industry,鈥� said Steve Mayo, Ray鈥檚 son and president of North Carolina Manufacturing, Inc. 鈥淗is passion for machining was something he shared with those who worked under his leadership, and my family and I are pleased to know that his legacy will continue through this scholarship to support WCC鈥檚 Computer-Integrated Machining students.鈥�
Born and raised in Nahunta, Mayo is remembered as an advocate for Wayne County. He was appointed to represent District 1 on the Wayne County Board of Commissioners in 2011 and was elected vice chairman in 2012. He served as chairman of the board from 2019 until his death and was the board鈥檚 longest-serving member.
Additionally, Mayo鈥檚 dedication to the community included involvement in his church and service on many other boards and committees. He was a member of the Eastern Carolina Workforce Development Board, Military Affairs Committee, Wayne County Development Alliance, Wayne County Board of Social Services, the Wayne County Public Library Board of Advisors, and many others.
Mayo鈥檚 widow, Janice; his son, Steve; and his daughter, Karen, established the WCC scholarship endowment in his name, which has also been supported monetarily by the Wayne County Board of Commissioners.
