WCC English Instructor Dean Tuck

Tuck鈥檚 poem 鈥淎fter St. Matthew and the Angel鈥 won first place in a contest for ekphrasis poetry, which is written in response to another work of art. The contest was held by literary magazine Tar River Poetry in association with the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA).

Poets were asked to choose a piece from the NCMA for their poetry responses. Tuck鈥檚 poem is a response to the painting St. Matthew and the Angel.

Tuck鈥檚 prize for winning includes an honorarium, an invitation to read his poem at the End Paper: NCMA Art Book Fair poetry reading, and a broadside of the poem produced by artists Terry Schupbach-Gordon and Toby Gordon of Catbird (on-the-Yadkin) Press.

One of the broadsides can be found on the third floor of WCC鈥檚 Dogwood Building.

In addition to poetry, Tuck has written a novel, Twinless Twin, that will be released this year. He will be reading a selection from the novel and discussing the book鈥檚 journey to publication as part of the Foundation of WCC鈥檚 Arts and Humanities lecture series this fall.
